
Twenty six Mt St Michael students exhibiting nine projects took the BT Young Scientist by storm last weekend. With the results announced, there was a loud cheer for three Mt St Michael fifth year students Rory McCarthy, Adam Baker and Vincent Daly who were third in the Senior Category with an amazing project on Fingerprinting Water and determining its age to help improve the quality of our rivers.
Highly commended in the Health category were Transition year students Caoimhe Scully, Niamh Wygers and Miya Sullivan with their fascinating project called Honey Healers - Unveiling the anti-biotic powers of different honeys and incorporating them into making medical bandages.
Then a Display Award to TY Chloe Cantillon with her project: Ridiculing RICE - Producing a Proper Protocol for Acute Soft Tissue Injuries.
All nine projects were inspirational and it is obvious to see how they qualified for the competition out of 2800 entries.
TY students Holly Murray, Anna Brinkman , Orla McCarthy displayed their Project: Tides of Contamination: The Effects of Tidal Estuaries on Water Quality of Local beaches.
Ty students Oran O Donovan, Joe Mccarthy, Cathal O Loughlin exhibited their Project: Solar brilliance: Powering tomorrow with the sun.
Ty students Stephen Jennings, Liam O Brien, Niklas Schnell had a Project on Silage Pit Showdown: Battle of the Biofilms vs. Plastic Covers.
Ty students Julia Soden, Siun Corish and Ella Fee Investigated Pulsed Electrical Fields Application to Cells.
5th year students Aine O Donovan, Jenn Louise Hayes, Lucy Medcalf and Emma Crowley worked on An Investigation into the Use of Natural Compost vs Slurry and Synthetic Fertilisers in a Community Garden
3rd year students: Daniel O Mahony, Jan O’ Longphuirt and Jamie Barton exhibited their project on the Impact of the School Run on Air Quality.
The school is very proud of all nine groups who displayed their work for the week in Dublin and a special thank you to teachers Alan O Rourke, Alison O Neill and Bernie Power for their expertise and guidance throughout.
